RBC has a long history of service and support to the Aboriginal community and Aboriginal businesses. In fact, RBC was one of the first banks to open a full-service branch on a First Nations reserve. RBC wants to continue to be an employer of choice for Aboriginal people. As such, the company has many Aboriginal programs and initiatives in place.
RBC's Aboriginal Stay in School program is designed for youth going in to grade 9 and up till grade 12. The program has been in place since 1994 and provides "work and learn" opportunities for youth during the summer months.
RBC Royal Bank has also developed an educational awards program to assist Aboriginal Canadians in attending or applying to post-secondary programs in Canada. Five educational awards are offered to students in disciplines relevant to the banking industry. The awards assist with the cost of tuition, text books and supplies, and contribute to living expenses during the academic year. RBC is also proud of the Royal Eagles, an employee group that provides the opportunity for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal employees to meet. The goals of the Royal Eagles is to enhance the workplace by creating awareness of aboriginal culture, providing a support system for new hires and existing Aboriginal employees, and acting as a liaison between RBC, its employees and the Aboriginal community. This is achieved through activities such as providing peer support and mentorship to Aboriginal employees, participation in volunteer initiatives both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, and remaining connected with the community.
